Review & Description

"Four Scoops" Is Over The Top is a collection of 36 original, entertaining short stories and poems. It's the third in the "Scoops" series and combines the best elements of its forerunners, "Two Scoops" Is Just Right and "Three Scoops" Is A Blast! These tales, which deal with relationships and all of the quirks and oddities that bind humanity together, skip around in time and location and even verge into elements of fantasy and make-believe.

Sometimes serious but more often light-hearted and almost always insightful, these pieces are sure to entertain and surprise readers. Skillfully crafted and mainly written to be fun for readers, they can also bring a tear to the eye when the narrative warrants.

Mr. Carrick is a critically-acclaimed author whose story "The Size of the Skip" - found in "Three Scoops" Is A Blast! - was short-listed for the 2010 Lorian Hemingway Short Story Award. In 2011, he received another Honorable Mention in the world-renowned Hemingway competition for "Caboose Follies", which appears in "Four Scoops" Is Over The Top.

What would you do if street thugs invaded your home? What if you’re a daycare provider, caring for a dozen children at the time? Lisa Kaamp, a most unlikely heroine, faces just such a nightmare in This Time You Lose, the suspense driven story of one woman’s struggle to survive when she and the children she cares for become victims of a home invasion gone terribly wrong. Lisa Kaamp operates a small childcare business out of her home in Nogeksum, Michigan. Highly respected and known for going the extra mile for her daycare kids, she thinks she’s handled every daycare emergency possible. But nothing prepares her for the horror she now faces. Lisa finds herself bound and gagged, four strange men in her home, and the daycare children held hostage in the next room. Terrorized by her captors as the authorities work to meet the ransom deadline, she tries negotiating with the men for the release of the children, but soon realizes they have no intention of letting anyone go. With the deadline approaching, Lisa must do the unimaginable to protect the children and get everyone out alive. Review & Description

Dr. Krakow's conclusion:

"The dramatic decrease in cervical cancer deaths is a direct result of screening using the Pap smear. Now there is hope that remaining deaths may decrease even more with the approval of two vaccines against HPV, the primary cause of this cancer. However, in order for it to be effective, people must understand that its use requires a frank discussion about issues of sexuality. Otherwise, we risk needless deaths over issues of ignorance and fear."

Part of the "Doc, I Think I Have..." series of ebooks designed to explain complex medical issues in simple, easy to understand terms, DOC, I THINK I HAVE HPV! tackles the controversial topic of HPV and the associated vaccine. The book includes links to authoritative Web sites on HPV, as well as media accounts of the controversy surrounding the vaccine, its cost, its effectiveness, and the broader socio-economic implications of its use. This is a "must-read" if you have pre-teenage children, as background reading before you consult your doctor, which is what Dr. Krakow emphatically recommends.

Empathy and Parenting: teaching empathy with children - Empathy training with empathy exercises (Kindle Edition)

Empathy and Parenting: teaching empathy with children - Empathy training with empathy exercises
Empathy and Parenting: teaching empathy with children - Empathy training with empathy exercises (Kindle Edition)
By Frank Ra

Review & Description

How to teach empathy in children? What is the difference between empathy and sympathy? “Empathy and Parenting: teaching empathy with children - Empathy training with empathy exercises “, based on "A course in Happiness", is a training in empathy for parents, teachers, educators, etc. who want to facilitate empathy in children. ”Empathy and Parenting: teaching empathy with children - Empathy training with empathy exercises” comes with selected empathy exercises.

While the way children understand the intellectual meaning, and implications, of empathy varies from case to case, a straightforward approach makes everything easier to relate to. For example, show a few pictures of people who clearly look happy, bored, suprised, etc and ask children to identify what these people are feeling. Then, show pictures of people waiting for a bus, looking at their watch, etc. and ask children to identify what these people are likely to be thinking. Then, just explain that is empathy: the capacity of understanding what other people feel and think. Explain that we all have this capacity for empathy, and that it gets better and better when cultivated with determination. Show pictures of happy kids in groups, playing together, listening to each other, etc. and explain that kids who are empathic are better at understanding their own feelings and the ones of peers, parents, teachers, etc. This resulting in people liking even more to communicate with them, at the advantage of everyone's happiness.

If Your Adolescent Has Depression or Bipolar Disorder: An Essential Resource for Parents (Adolescent Mental Health Initiative) (Paperback)

If Your Adolescent Has Depression or Bipolar Disorder: An Essential Resource for Parents (Adolescent Mental Health Initiative)
If Your Adolescent Has Depression or Bipolar Disorder: An Essential Resource for Parents (Adolescent Mental Health Initiative) (Paperback)
By Dwight L. Evans

Review & Description

While coping with teenage moodiness can be difficult under any circumstances, it can be especially challenging if a teenager has a serious mood disorder. This concise, readable book is the definitive guide to understanding and getting effective help for adolescents with depression or bipolar disorder, designed for parents and other adults in contact with afflicted teens. It combines the most current scientific expertise available today--including the newest treatments and medications and the latest research findings on mood disorders--with no-nonsense, hands-on advice from parents who have faced these disorders in their own children.
Among other topics, the book addresses the biochemical roots of adolescent mood disorders, the ongoing debate over psychiatric medications for young people, and practical strategies for helping a teen cope at home and at school. It concludes on a hopeful note, by reviewing the latest scientific evidence on methods of stopping mood disorders before they start or minimizing the risk of recurrence. A growing body of research now shows that early diagnosis and treatment of depression and bipolar disorder may reduce the severity of these diseases, both now and in the future. Including red flags to look out for and warnings on the dangers of doing nothing, this book will provide the information and tools parents need to help adolescents achieve the best possible outcome.

On the Adolescent Mental Health Initiative series:
The Adolescent Mental Health Initiative series addresses some of the major mental health issues facing teenagers today--eating disorders, anxiety disorders, depression, and schizophrenia. Of the dozen or so books planned for the series, the first four, including the two presented here, focus on how parents and other adults, including teachers, coaches, guidance counselors, and even pediatricians, can help afflicted teens overcome the disrupting and often devastating challenges of these disorders. Each book is an authoritative guide that offers essential information such as how to go about getting a diagnosis, what the latest treatment options and prevention strategies are, how to help teens cope with mental illness at home and at school and, perhaps most importantly, what the warning signs and red flags are that parents and other adults should look out for in teenagers who may be at risk for these diseases. Combining the expertise of leading psychiatrists and psychologists with the experience of everyday people who have faced these disorders in their own children, the books are designed to help adults deal effectively with adolescent mental illness and to empower them to act immediately and wisely in getting teens the best available treatment possible.

One of America's foremost writers collects the best stories submitted to NPR's National Story Project -- and illuminates the powerful role of storytelling in all our lives.

When Paul Auster was asked to join NPR's Weekend All Things Considered program to tell stories, he turned the proposition on its head: he would let the stories come to him. He invited listeners to submit brief, true-life anecdotes about events that touched their lives.

And so the National Story Project was born. It was one of NPR's most popular features. The response was so overwhelming, with more than 4,000 stories submitted that Auster decided to cull the top works and make them available in a book -- and now this CD collection. His selections -- hilarious blunders, wrenching coincidences, brushes with death, miraculous encounters, improbable ironies -- come from people of all ages and walks of life.

This one-of-a-kind collection is a testament to the power of storytelling that offers a glimpse into the American soul. By turns poignant, nostalgic, funny, and strange, it is an audiobook to be treasured and shared for years to come.

Review & Description

Through vivid stories of the experiences of their patients (both adults and children), Drs. Hallowell and Ratey show the varied forms ADD takes -- from the hyperactive search for high stimulation to the floating inattention of daydreaming -- and the transforming impact of precise diagnosis and treatment. This clear and valuable book dispels a variety of myths about attention deficit disorder (ADD). Since both authors have ADD themselves, and both are successful medical professionals, perhaps there's no surprise that the two myths they attack most persistently are: (a) that ADD is an issue only for children; and (b) that ADD corresponds simply to limited intelligence or limited self-discipline. "The word disorder puts the syndrome entirely in the domain of pathology, where it should not entirely be. Although ADD can generate a host of problems, there are also advantages to having it, advantages that this book will stress, such as high energy, intuitiveness, creativity, and enthusiasm, and they are completely overlooked by the 'disorder' model." The authors go on to cite Mozart and Einstein as examples of probable ADD sufferers. (The problem as they see it is not so much attention deficit but attention inconsistency: "Most of us with ADD can in fact hyperfocus at times.") Although they warn against overdiagnosis, they also do a convincing job of answering the criticism that "everybody, and therefore nobody" has ADD. Using numerous case studies and a discussion of the way ADD intersects with other conditions (e.g., depression, substance abuse, and obsessive-compulsive disorder), they paint a concrete picture of the syndrome's realities. Especially helpful are the lists of tips for dealing with ADD in a child, a partner, or a family member. --Richard Farr Read more

If Your Adolescent Has an Anxiety Disorder: An Essential Resource for Parents (Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands' Adolescent Mental Health Initiative) (Paperback)
By Edna B. Foa

Review & Description

Growing up can be stressful for any teenager, but it is considerably harder for the many adolescents who develop an anxiety disorder. This book is an essential guide for parents, teachers, or other adults involved with teenagers who may e affected by these disorders. By bringing together two strands of expertise--that of mental health professionals and of parents who have lived through the experience of their own teenager's mental illness--If Your Adolescent Has an Anxiety Disorder provides adult readers with the clinical information and practical advice they need to understand and help the teen. There are chapters detailing four the different types of anxiety disorders, including social anxiety, generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and post-traumatic stress disorders. Each includes a clearly written definition, a discussion of factors that can contribute to developing the disorder, treatment information, and case studies based on a real family's own experience with the disease. Tips and quotes from parents are sprinkled liberally throughout the text, and helpful sidebars provide more detailed information. The authors also provide a chapter fully dedicated to discussing treatment options, including what role parents play in treatment, how to juggle treatment and school, and how to handle insurance and managed care issues. Knowing the right information about anxiety disorders is the first step towards helping adolescents who are dealing with them grow to become healthy, happy adults. Read more
